## What we do, and what we do not

We have not tested any of the products we cover. Units we claim to have tested: 0.
Sponsored placements: 0. Free products accepted: 0. We own no lab, no test kits and
no units.

What we do instead: verify each certification against the body that issued it,
compile published specifications with a source URL on every figure, credit
independent lab results to whoever produced them, and compute cost of ownership
from published cartridge cadence.

## The three facts this site exists to establish

1. NO SHOWER FILTER SOFTENS WATER. Contact time inside a shower head is roughly
   0.10 to 0.14 seconds; the ion exchange that removes calcium and magnesium needs
   seconds. Independent bench testing found no filter in the category reduced
   hardness. Products marketed as "shower water softeners" reduce chlorine instead.

2. THEY DO REDUCE FREE CHLORINE, and that is a real benefit. Independently
   measured reductions ranged from 42% to 100% across different units, so which
   filter you buy matters a great deal.

3. CHLORINE AND CHLORAMINE ARE DIFFERENT PROBLEMS. KDF-55 reduces free chlorine
   and does not break the chlorine-ammonia bond in chloramine. Vitamin C and
   catalytic carbon do. NSF/ANSI 177, the only shower filter standard, explicitly
   does not evaluate performance in the presence of chloramines. About one in five
   US water systems uses chloramine.

## What NSF/ANSI 177 actually requires

Free available chlorine reduction of at least 50% from a 2.0 mg/L challenge across
the rated service life; material safety (no lead as an intentional ingredient);
structural integrity to 125 psi; at least 1 gpm at 80 psi; and specified product
literature. It is explicitly NOT a health effects standard, and it does not cover
hardness, chloramine, metals, fluoride, PFAS or bacteria.
