Afina measured ~99 percent chlorine reduction and names its media; Canopy measured 97 percent and publishes nothing at all. Neither is certified. The tiebreaker is that Afina's test also showed disinfection byproducts rising and no hardness reduction — findings Canopy's test did not produce.

Two points apart is not a difference

Ninety-nine against ninety-seven, on two different supplies at two different influent concentrations, from single measurements at unknown cartridge ages. Treating that gap as a ranking would be reading far more precision into the data than the data supports. On chlorine, these two are effectively tied and both are at the strong end of the category.

So the decision has to be made on everything else — and on everything else they are very different products.

What Afina gives you that Canopy does not

Information. Afina names its media outright, states a flow rate, and had that flow rate independently confirmed at 1.85 GPM retaining full baseline. Canopy's product page states three spray settings and, when we checked it, no media, no flow rate, no capacity and no certification of any kind.

That gap has a practical consequence beyond curiosity. With Afina's media list you can reason about chloramine — KDF-55 with calcium sulfite is the wrong tool for it, so a chloraminated household knows to look elsewhere. With Canopy you cannot even form the question, because there is nothing to reason from. An unanswerable question is worse than an unwelcome answer.

What Canopy avoids that Afina did not

The byproduct result. In the Afina test, all three disinfection byproducts the reviewer measured increased after filtration rather than falling. Canopy was simply not among the two units in that broader test set shown to remove DBPs — which is an absence of benefit, not a recorded worsening.

And the hard-water claim, on both

Afina is marketed for hard water and reduced none — 250 PPM in, 251 out. Canopy's marketing leans on hard-water language too and it was included in the same category-wide finding: no filter in the test set reduced hardness. Why that is a mechanism problem rather than a quality problem.

The verdict

  • Buy Afina if you want the named media, a confirmed flow rate and the marginally higher chlorine figure — and your water report does not show disinfection byproducts near their limits.
  • Buy Canopy if you want the design-led head and are content to buy on an independent measurement alone, with no specification to check.
  • Buy neither if you want a certification. The Culligan WSH-C125 is the only filtered shower head we cover that has one.
  • Buy neither if you are on chloraminated water or your complaint is hardness.
