Water is inside a shower head for about a tenth of a second. That is nowhere near long enough to pull calcium and magnesium out of it. What a good filter does do is remove chlorine — which is a different, real and genuinely useful thing.
So this site starts with the correction, then helps you buy for the water you actually have. We check certifications against the body that issued them, credit other people’s lab data by name, and publish what each product does not do.
What we publish
Search any retailer for “shower water softener” and you will find dozens of products whose media is KDF-55 and calcium sulfite. Those media reduce chlorine. Neither performs the ion exchange that softening actually means.
When WaterFilterGuru put the category on a bench, they reported that none of the shower filters they tested reduced water hardness, despite several marketing claims to the contrary. We did not run those tests and we do not claim to — we are citing them, and crediting them, because they are the only measurements of this question we could find.

About one in five American water systems disinfects with chloramine rather than free chlorine. KDF-55 — the media in most of this category — reduces free chlorine and does not break the chlorine-ammonia bond in chloramine. And NSF/ANSI 177, the only certification written for shower filters, does not evaluate performance in the presence of chloramines.
So a reader on chloraminated water can buy the highest-rated, fully certified product on any roundup in this SERP and get a restrictor. Your utility publishes the answer annually, for free.
We have not tested any, and we say so. What we do instead: compile the published specifications, check every certification against the body that supposedly issued it, credit independent lab results to the people who ran them, and show the cost arithmetic in public.
That produces a different ranking from most of this field, because the things you can verify and the things brands advertise turn out to be almost separate. The two cheapest products we cover are among the only three with a certification you can look up. The two most-searched brands publish a testing claim and no certification at all.
