Shower filters and PFAS

Almost nothing in this category addresses PFAS, and exactly one product in our registry publishes test data against the relevant standard. That is worth being precise about.

The short answer

PFAS reduction is covered by NSF/ANSI 53, a drinking-water standard, not by the shower filter standard. In our registry, the Weddell Duo is the only unit publishing NSF/ANSI 53 PFAS test data — a stated 99.05 to 99.99 percent reduction, tested 2023-09-23. Everything else here is silent on PFAS.

Why almost nothing addresses it

PFAS — per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances — are stable enough to have earned the nickname forever chemicals, and that stability is exactly the problem for a point-of-use filter with a tenth of a second of contact. What does work is a well-designed activated carbon block with real media volume, which is why the units with PFAS data are inline bodies rather than shower heads.

The standard covering it is NSF/ANSI 53, health effects, which is a drinking water standard. NSF/ANSI 177, the shower filter standard, does not touch PFAS — it covers free available chlorine reduction, material safety, structural integrity, minimum flow rate and literature, and it is explicitly not a health effects standard. So a filter can be fully certified for shower use and have no PFAS testing behind it whatsoever, which describes almost everything in this category.

The one product with data

Weddell publishes a performance table listing NSF/ANSI 177 for chlorine reduction (tested 2023-11-21), NSF/ANSI 53 for PFAS reduction (tested 2023-09-23) and NSF/ANSI 42 for particulate reduction (tested 2023-11-28), with a stated PFAS reduction of 99.05 percent minimum to 99.99 percent maximum. Publishing the test dates alongside the standards is unusual in this category and it is a meaningful thing to do — it lets a reader see how current the data is.

How much this should influence your purchase

Honestly? Less than the marketing around PFAS would suggest, and for a specific reason. PFAS is a serious contaminant, and its principal exposure route in drinking water is ingestion. If PFAS is present in your supply at a level that concerns you, the correct response is treatment of your drinking water — a certified point-of-use or point-of-entry system — not a filter on one shower.

That said, a filter that has been tested against a health effects standard has demonstrated something real about its carbon block, and it is reasonable to treat that as a quality signal even if the shower is not where PFAS exposure is decided. It is one of the reasons the Weddell Duo ranks where it does across this site.

What we are not claiming

  • That the Weddell Duo's PFAS figures apply to your water. They are results from a defined test, published by the manufacturer, and we have not independently verified them.
  • That dermal exposure to PFAS in a shower is a meaningful health route. We found no evidence establishing that, and we are not going to assert it to sell a filter.
  • That any other product in this category removes PFAS. None of them publishes data either way, which is not evidence of failure and is not evidence of performance.
