There is no shower filter that removes everything

It is a searched phrase, an advertised promise and a physically impossible product. Understanding why is the fastest route to buying the right thing.

The short answer

No shower filter removes everything, and none is tested against a standard that would show it. NSF/ANSI 177 covers free available chlorine and nothing else. Contact time of 0.10 to 0.14 seconds rules out adsorption and ion exchange. "Removes everything" is a phrase, not a specification.

Why the phrase exists

Because it is what people want, and because there is no penalty for saying it. This is one of the highest cost-per-click phrases in the whole category, which tells you advertisers are competing hard for the buyer typing it. A buyer who wants everything removed is a buyer who has not yet decided what their actual problem is, and is therefore susceptible to whichever page promises the most.

It is also a phrase with no definition attached. "Everything" is not a contaminant list. No standard tests it. Nobody can be caught out failing it, because there is nothing to fail.

The three reasons it cannot be true

Contact time. Water is inside a shower head for 0.10 to 0.14 seconds — published by a filter manufacturer on its own technical page. Standard activated carbon needs 25 to 40 seconds of empty-bed contact for chlorine adsorption alone. Ion exchange, which is what removing hardness requires, is slower still. Fast chemical media can do useful work in a tenth of a second; adsorption and exchange cannot.

Media volume. A shower cartridge holds a few ounces. Removing a broad contaminant range requires either a lot of media or a membrane, and a shower head has room for neither. This is precisely why the units with genuine disinfection byproduct and PFAS data are inline bodies with more media volume than a head can house.

Certification scope. NSF/ANSI 177 requires a 50 percent reduction of a 2.0 mg/L free available chlorine challenge, structural integrity to 125 psi, no intentional lead in the materials, at least 1 gpm at 80 psi, and specified literature. It is explicitly not a health effects standard. Nothing beyond chlorine is being tested on any product in this category by anyone.

What a good filter actually claims

Compare the language. Culligan says the WSH-C125 reduces chlorine, sulfur odor and scale, and is tested and certified by IAPMO R&T. Weddell publishes three standards with test dates and reduction ranges. AquaBliss says the SF220 is designed to reduce chlorine and tells chloramine customers to buy something else. Those are all narrow, specific, checkable statements — and they come from products that perform well.

The pattern is consistent enough to use as a shopping heuristic: the narrower and more specific the claim, the more likely it is that somebody measured something.

What to buy instead of everything

  1. Find out what is actually in your water. Four minutes, free. Until you do this, "everything" is the only specification you have.
  2. Buy for your disinfectant. Free chlorine or chloramine — the two need different media.
  3. If hardness is the real complaint, no filter is the answer. Softener versus filter.
  4. If a contaminant genuinely concerns you for health reasons, treat drinking water with a device certified for it. The shower is not where that gets decided.

+ Are 15-stage and 20-stage shower filters better?

Not inherently. There is no standard defining a stage and a mesh screen counts as one. Ask what the media is instead of how many layers there are.

+ Do any shower filters remove chemicals from water?

They reduce free chlorine reliably, and a small number reduce disinfection byproducts. Beyond that, nothing in this class is tested.
