Why your shower filter is leaking

Four causes, in the order they actually occur. Work down the list and you will find it — a leaking shower filter is very rarely a faulty product.

The short answer

In order of likelihood: thread tape wrapped the wrong way so it unwound as you tightened; dirty threads with old tape or scale still on them; a damaged or displaced O-ring inside the housing; and an over-tightened fitting that has cracked. All four are fixable in about ten minutes with a roll of PTFE tape.

First, locate it precisely. Dry everything, run the shower for thirty seconds, and look at where the water actually emerges — the arm-to-filter joint, the filter-to-head joint, or the seam around the middle of the filter body. Water travels along fittings and drips from the lowest point, so the drip location is not the leak location. This one observation usually identifies the cause on its own.

Cause 1 — tape wrapped the wrong way

By a wide margin the commonest, and it produces a leak at a threaded joint immediately after installation or a cartridge change. PTFE tape must be wrapped in the same direction the fitting turns as you tighten it — clockwise, looking at the open end of the thread. Wrapped anticlockwise, the act of screwing the fitting on unwinds and bunches the tape instead of compressing it into the threads.

The fix is to take the joint apart, strip every scrap of the old tape, and rewrap three to four turns in the correct direction. Adding more tape over the top of a bad wrap does not work and is the second thing most people try.

Cause 2 — dirty threads

Old tape residue, scale and grit prevent the new tape seating into the thread profile. On a hard-water supply this is especially common, because the shower arm threads accumulate mineral deposit that is invisible until you run a fingernail over it.

Clean the threads properly — pick off old tape, and on a scaled arm wipe them with a cloth dampened in white vinegar and let it sit a minute before wiping dry. Then re-tape. This is the same descaling chemistry that restores flow through a scaled shower head.

Cause 3 — a damaged or displaced O-ring

This is the one that appears right after a cartridge change and gets misdiagnosed as a faulty cartridge. The leak comes from the seam of the housing rather than from a threaded joint, which is the tell.

Open the unit and inspect the O-ring: flattened, cracked, twisted, or sitting proud of its groove all cause it. Most cartridges ship with a spare precisely because the old one is often not reusable after six months compressed and wet. Seat the replacement in its groove without stretching it, and close the housing hand-tight. The full cartridge procedure.

Cause 4 — an over-tightened, cracked fitting

Shower filter bodies are plastic or thin-wall metal. Over-tightening splits them, usually at the thread root where you cannot see it, and the resulting leak is a steady weep that no amount of tape or O-ring work will stop. If you have done causes 1 through 3 correctly and it still leaks from the same place, this is what you have.

There is no field repair. A cracked housing is a replacement, and it is worth saying plainly rather than sending you round the loop a fourth time. Hand-tight on reassembly is what prevents a repeat.

The leak that only appears once the water is hot

This one confuses people, because the joint is dry on a cold test and weeping five minutes into a shower. It is not imaginary and it is not a different cause — it is the same causes above, revealed by heat.

Plastic and thin-wall metal housings expand as they warm, and they do not expand evenly: the threaded collar and the body change dimension at slightly different rates. A joint sealed marginally — tape a little thin, or an O-ring slightly compressed out of shape — holds at cold-water dimensions and opens up at shower temperature. The fix is the same as cause 1 or 3; the diagnosis just needs a hot test rather than a cold one.

So when you re-test after a repair, run it hot for a few minutes rather than pronouncing it fixed after thirty seconds cold. This is also a reason not to over-tighten a warm fitting: plastic that has been heat-cycled and then forced is exactly the material that cracks into cause 4.

The four causes apply to both, but they present at different places, and knowing which product you own narrows the search before you pick up a cloth.

Handheld setups deserve a specific warning. The rubber washers inside hose fittings are consumables that perish over a few years, and a leak at either end of a hose is far more often a dead washer than anything you installed. Replacing them costs almost nothing and is not a filter repair at all — which is exactly why fitting the filter at the arm rather than the wand end keeps the two problems separate.

When it is not the filter

Worth ruling out before you take anything apart. Water emerging from the shower head itself, from the wall where the arm enters, or dripping only when the shower is off, are all problems the filter did not cause. A filter cannot leak when there is no pressure in the line, so a drip that continues long after the shower is turned off is coming from the valve, not from anything you fitted.

And if the complaint is weak flow rather than water in the wrong place, that is a different diagnosis with a different list — four causes of a weak shower, only one of which is the filter.
