How to replace a shower filter cartridge
The job almost nobody does on schedule, which is why so many shower filters are quietly doing nothing. Here it is properly, for inline units and filtered heads alike.

Turn off the shower, unscrew the filter housing or the head by hand, lift the spent cartridge out, seat the new one the same way round, re-tape the threads with PTFE tape if you separated a threaded joint, and hand-tighten. Run it for a minute — some media discolors the first water through, which is normal.
Two facts make this the most consequential maintenance job in the category. The reactive media in a shower filter gives you no warning when it is finished — only the sediment stages announce themselves, by restricting flow. And a cartridge nobody replaces turns a filter into a restrictor that filters nothing while looking exactly the same.
What you need
- The correct cartridge. Not a guess — the cartridge finder maps which part fits which unit, and several brands are explicitly not cross-compatible.
- PTFE thread tape, only if you break a threaded joint. Many cartridge swaps open a housing rather than a thread, and need none.
- A cloth, to grip a housing that has been sitting wet for six months without marking the finish.
- Nothing else. If instructions call for a wrench beyond freeing a seized housing, you are reading about a different device.
The universal steps
- Turn the shower off and let it drain. There is no need to shut off the supply at the valve for a cartridge swap.
- Open the unit. Inline bodies usually unscrew across the middle or at one end; filtered heads generally open at the faceplate or unscrew from the arm. Both should move by hand — use a cloth for grip if a housing has stiffened.
- Note which way round the old cartridge sits before you remove it. Multi-stage cartridges are directional: the sediment stage faces the incoming water. Fitting one backwards puts the fine stage first, which clogs it fast.
- Lift the spent cartridge out and check the O-ring. A flattened, cracked or displaced O-ring is the commonest cause of a leak that appears immediately after a cartridge change. Most units ship a spare with the cartridge.
- Seat the new cartridge fully. It should sit flush without force. If it needs force, it is either the wrong part or the wrong way round.
- Close the housing hand-tight. These are plastic or thin-wall metal threads and over-tightening cracks them — the seal comes from the O-ring or the tape, not from torque.
- If you separated a threaded joint, clean the old tape off, wrap three to four turns of PTFE tape in the direction of tightening, and reassemble.
- Run the shower for a minute and watch the joints. Some carbon and KDF media shed fines on first use and the water can run gray or dark briefly. That is normal and clears.
- Write the date on the housing in marker. This is the step everyone skips and the only one that reliably gets the next change done.
Where the brands differ
The mechanics are near-universal; the part numbers are not. Culligan's WHR-140 fits the WSH-C125, ISH-100 and HSH-C135, so one cartridge covers several units and is stocked in ordinary hardware retail. Sprite's SLC covers the whole Slim-Line range. AquaBliss uses SFC100 and SFC220, with the SFC220 fitting both the SF100 and SF220. The Weddell Duo runs two cartridges, a sediment and a carbon, replaced together. iSpring states its FSF2 is not compatible with other systems at all.

One more brand-specific trap: Philips sells differently numbered models in the US and internationally, with different cartridges. Read the model number off your own unit rather than off the box you remember, because manufacturers revise product lines and the successor often takes a different part.

A certified replacement shower head
The cheapest way to get a genuine third-party certification on your wall. Culligan states plainly that the WSH-C125 is tested and certified by IAPMO R&T, which is more than most of this category can say.

Certified media, honestly benchmarked
Certified to NSF/ANSI 177 by IAPMO, and the most instructive product in this set: when WaterFilterGuru measured it independently they got 42% chlorine reduction — a reminder that the certification floor is 50% of a controlled challenge, not a promise about your shower.

Chlorine and disinfection byproducts
The only filter in this set whose maker publishes its NSF test dates and reduction ranges, and the one an independent lab measured at 100% chlorine removal. It also removed disinfection byproducts, which almost nothing else did.

Chloramine, on the maker's own routing
The one product here whose maker states outright that it reduces chloramine as well as chlorine, and then backs that up by routing chloramine customers away from its own cheaper model. That is an unusually honest piece of product literature.

The three mistakes
- Cartridge in backwards. Directional multi-stage cartridges clog quickly when reversed, and the symptom — falling flow within weeks — reads exactly like a defective part.
- Old O-ring reused when it should not be. If it is flattened, cracked or was displaced on removal, replace it. This is the leak nobody diagnoses correctly.
- Over-tightening. Plastic threads crack, and a cracked housing leaks in a way no amount of tape fixes. Hand-tight is the specification.

What to do with the old cartridge
Bin it. Shower filter cartridges are mixed-media assemblies — plastic housing, carbon, KDF alloy, sediment layers — and no manufacturer in our registry publishes a take-back or recycling program that we could find. We are not going to invent one, and we would rather say that plainly than offer a vague gesture at sustainability.
You cannot regenerate any of it at home. Rinsing a mesh pre-stage clears loose sediment and buys nothing on the reactive media: KDF is consumed by oxidation, calcium sulfite and vitamin C are consumed by the reaction itself, and a loaded carbon bed cannot be driven off in a kitchen. The mechanisms.
Questions people actually ask
+ How do you change a shower filter cartridge?
Turn the shower off, open the housing by hand, note the cartridge orientation, swap it, check the O-ring, close hand-tight, and run for a minute. Re-tape any threaded joint you separated with PTFE tape.
+ Why is my water dark after changing the shower filter?
Loose carbon or KDF fines flushing out on first use. It clears within about a minute of running. Water that stays discolored after several minutes is not normal.
+ Does it matter which way the cartridge goes in?
Yes on multi-stage cartridges. The sediment stage faces the incoming water; reversed, the fine stage clogs quickly and flow drops within weeks.
+ Do I need thread tape to change a cartridge?
Only if you separate a threaded joint. Many swaps just open a housing. When you do need it, wrap three to four turns in the direction of tightening.
+ Can you clean and reuse a shower filter cartridge?
No. You can rinse a mesh pre-stage, but KDF, calcium sulfite and vitamin C are chemically consumed and a loaded carbon bed cannot be regenerated at home.
+ How often should the cartridge be changed?
