Why vitamin C is a genuinely different proposition

Every other media in this category has a contact-time problem to some degree. Activated carbon needs 25 to 40 seconds of empty-bed contact for chlorine adsorption, and a shower head provides 0.10 to 0.14 seconds. KDF's redox reaction is fast enough to work in that window, which is why it dominates — but it does not break the chlorine-nitrogen bond in chloramine.

Ascorbic acid sidesteps both problems. It reacts with chlorine and chloramine directly, converting them chemically, and the reaction is fast enough that shower contact time is not the constraint it is for adsorption. That is the whole case for this product class and it is a sound one.

And the cost of that mechanism

The media is consumed. A carbon or KDF cartridge is exhausted when its surface is loaded or its alloy is spent, which happens on a schedule roughly proportional to volume — hence gallon ratings. A vitamin C cartridge is used up by the reaction itself, which means its life depends on how much disinfectant your utility puts in the water rather than on how many gallons pass through.

Two households on the same product, in different supply zones, will get genuinely different service lives.
