Calcium sulfite, explained
The second half of the pairing inside most of this category. KDF gets the attention; calcium sulfite is doing at least as much of the work, especially once the water is hot.

Calcium sulfite removes free chlorine by chemical reduction — the sulfite ion is oxidized to sulfate and the chlorine becomes harmless chloride. It is fast, it tolerates hot water better than carbon, and it is consumed as it works. It does nothing for hardness and little for chloramine.
Read the media list on almost any premium filtered shower head and you find the same phrase: KDF-55 and calcium sulfite. Jolie says it. eskiin says it. Kitsch says it. Sprite brands the combination Chlorgon. It is the default pairing in this category, and while KDF gets explained everywhere, the other half rarely does.
The chemistry
Calcium sulfite is a reducing agent. Free chlorine in water is an oxidant looking for electrons; the sulfite ion has them to give. The sulfite is oxidized to sulfate, the chlorine is reduced to chloride, and both products stay dissolved and harmless. Chloride is the same ion in table salt, at concentrations far below anything you would taste.
This is a genuine chemical reaction in solution, not adsorption onto a surface. That distinction is the whole reason the media works in a shower. Activated carbon has to hold molecules against a surface long enough for them to stick, which takes tens of seconds. A redox reaction between dissolved species does not queue for surface area, so it fits inside the 0.10 to 0.14 seconds a shower head actually provides.
Why it is paired with KDF rather than replacing it
Because the two fail in different places, and each covers the other's weakness.
The row that matters most for a shower is the hot water one. Adsorption onto carbon weakens as temperature rises — heat gives adsorbed molecules the energy to leave the surface again — which is a real problem in a device that only ever sees hot water. Neither KDF nor calcium sulfite has that vulnerability, which is why the pairing dominates a category where carbon might otherwise be the obvious choice.
What it does not do
- Hardness. No ion exchange, so no reduction in calcium or magnesium. This bears repeating because calcium sulfite contains the word calcium, which misleads people in both directions — it neither adds meaningful hardness nor removes any. The correction.
- Chloramine. Partial at best, and no maker in our registry publishes a figure for calcium sulfite against chloramine specifically. If your report says chloramine, vitamin C is the media class with the mechanism.
- Disinfection byproducts. These need carbon-block volume. Calcium sulfite acts on free chlorine, not on the trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids chlorine has already formed.
- Sediment. It is a reactive media, not a strainer. Every cartridge containing it also contains mechanical stages, and those are what clog and cost you flow.
How it runs out
By being consumed. Unlike a sediment stage, which announces its exhaustion by restricting flow, calcium sulfite simply stops reacting once the available sulfite is spent — with nothing you can see, feel or smell until the chlorine smell returns.
That is why cartridges built on it are sold against a gallon rating or a calendar interval rather than a symptom. It is also why a filter that still flows perfectly after a year is very probably doing nothing at all. The cadence table sets out what each media type publishes.

Reading a media list that includes it
Calcium sulfite appearing in a media list is a good sign: it means the maker has chosen chemistry appropriate to shower contact time rather than counting mesh screens. What it does not tell you is quantity, and quantity is what determines capacity.
So treat it as a qualifier rather than a ranking factor. Once two products both contain KDF and calcium sulfite — which describes a large share of this category — the media list has stopped distinguishing them, and the questions that still discriminate are the published capacity, the flow rate, and whether anyone independent has certified or measured the finished device.
