How often to change a shower filter
The convention is six months. Whether that applies to you depends on your media, your water and how many people use the shower.

The convention is 6 months or about 10,000 gallons, whichever comes first. Vitamin C cartridges are the exception — their life tracks your utility's disinfectant dose rather than volume. Hard water, heavy chlorination and a busy household all shorten it, so plan on the short end of any published range.

Note how the disclosure splits. The units with a defined media volume publish gallon ratings you can plan against. The vitamin C products publish a time range, which is the honest answer for a media consumed by a reaction. And several premium products publish neither, which leaves you replacing on a subscription schedule the maker chose rather than one you can check.
What shortens it
- Hard water. The sediment and mesh stages load faster on hard water. AquaBliss says this outright, telling customers to replace sooner in high-chlorine or high-sediment areas.
- A heavily chlorinated supply. More disinfectant to react with, faster media consumption. Your water report has the residual figure.
- More people. A gallon rating divided across four showers a day runs out roughly four times faster than across one.
- Well water with iron or sediment. This can exhaust a cartridge in weeks. If it does, the treatment belongs upstream.
- Long, hot showers. More volume, and heat reduces carbon's effectiveness while it lasts.
How to actually remember
- Write the install date on the housing in marker. Unglamorous, and the only method that reliably works.
- Or take the decision away — a subscription cadence, which is what Jolie's 90-day schedule is really selling.
- Buy a widely-stocked cartridge, so replacing it is a trip rather than a special order. The cartridge finder.
- Set a calendar reminder for the short end of the range, then move it if the flow is still good and the water still smells clean.

A certified replacement shower head
The cheapest way to get a genuine third-party certification on your wall. Culligan states plainly that the WSH-C125 is tested and certified by IAPMO R&T, which is more than most of this category can say.

Certified to NSF/ANSI 177 by IAPMO, and the most instructive product in this set: when WaterFilterGuru measured it independently they got 42% chlorine reduction — a reminder that the certification floor is 50% of a controlled challenge, not a promise about your shower.

Reading a certification claim correctly
Worth owning and worth studying. Its listing says "NSF-Certified KDF", which certifies the material inside the cartridge, not the finished device. That is a real certification of a real thing, and it is not the same as the filter being certified.

What happens if you never change it
Two things, on different timescales. First the reactive media is exhausted and chlorine reduction quietly stops — the filter is now a decorative cylinder. Then the sediment stages keep loading, flow keeps dropping, and eventually you have a restrictor that filters nothing.
There is a third consideration on wells and on any supply with no residual disinfectant: a spent cartridge is a warm, wet, organic-loaded environment. KDF media inhibits bacterial growth, which is one reason it is worth having in the stack, but that property is not infinite either. A cartridge left in for years is not neutral.

You can rinse sediment off a mesh stage. You cannot regenerate KDF, calcium sulfite or vitamin C — they are consumed chemically, and nothing you do at home reverses that.
