Shower filters for well water
Nobody is chlorinating your well, so most of this category is solving a problem you do not have. Here is what a shower filter can and cannot do for well water.

Well water has no chlorine and no chloramine, so the entire premise of most shower filters does not apply. What a shower filter helps with on a well is sediment, hydrogen sulfide odor and some dissolved iron — and only at that fixture. Serious iron or bacteria need treatment upstream, not at the shower head.
About 13 percent of Americans get their water from a private well, and they are almost entirely ignored by this product category — which is built, marketed and certified around removing a disinfectant that nobody has added to their water. So the first thing to say is that if you are on a well, most of what you read about shower filters is written for somebody else.
What is actually in a well, from a shower's point of view
The bottom four rows are the ones that matter for health and the ones a shower filter cannot touch. Test the well; the EPA's guidance sets out what for and how often.
Why KDF is the media that matters here
On municipal water, KDF-55's job is stripping electrons from free chlorine. On well water there is no chlorine to strip, but the same redox chemistry acts on hydrogen sulfide and on some dissolved metals — and the copper-zinc alloy inhibits bacterial growth inside the cartridge itself. That last property matters more on a well than on a treated supply, because there is no residual disinfectant coming down the pipe to keep the inside of your filter from becoming a nice damp place for biofilm.
Culligan aims its inline ISH-100 squarely at this: sulfur odor, chlorine and scale, using KDF media that it notes inhibits bacterial growth. It is not sold on hair and skin outcomes, which for a well household is the more honest positioning.

Criteria first, products second. These are the things we ranked on, stated before anything is recommended.
- KDF content, because KDF has a real mechanism against iron and hydrogen sulfide, and inhibits bacterial growth inside the cartridge.
- A meaningful sediment stage, because wells carry particulates that municipal supply does not.

Sulfur odor on well water
The inline sibling of the WSH-C125, aimed squarely at sulfur odor and scale rather than at hair. It uses KDF media, which is the right mechanism for iron and hydrogen sulfide nuisance rather than for hardness.

Weddell Duo Shower Filter
Chlorine and disinfection byproducts
The only filter in this set whose maker publishes its NSF test dates and reduction ranges, and the one an independent lab measured at 100% chlorine removal. It also removed disinfection byproducts, which almost nothing else did.

Free chlorine on a small budget
The cheap inline unit that tells you when not to buy it: AquaBliss states that chloramine customers should choose the SF100 or a whole-house filter instead. For plain free chlorine it publishes a full media list and asks very little.

Reading a certification claim correctly
Worth owning and worth studying. Its listing says "NSF-Certified KDF", which certifies the material inside the cartridge, not the finished device. That is a real certification of a real thing, and it is not the same as the filter being certified.

What we would skip, and why
Any filter bought instead of testing the well
Coliform bacteria, nitrate and arsenic are not shower problems and no shower filter addresses them. Test first. The EPA's private well guidance sets out what to test for.
Vitamin C and chloramine-focused units
There is no disinfectant in your water to neutralize. You would be paying for chemistry with nothing to react with.
The thing to do before buying anything
Test the well. Not for shower reasons — for the reasons the EPA gives: coliform bacteria, nitrate, total dissolved solids and pH annually, plus anything locally relevant such as arsenic, iron or radon. None of those is a shower filter's business, and all of them matter more than how your hair feels.
The lab result also tells you which of the shower-relevant issues you actually have, which stops you buying a sulfur solution for an iron problem. If the number that comes back is a serious iron or manganese load, the correct purchase is a whole-house unit and the shower filter becomes a polishing step at best.

+ Do I need a shower filter on well water?
Not for chlorine — there is none. For sediment, sulfur odor and some iron at that fixture, it can help. For anything health-relevant, no.
