Iron in shower water

The short answer

Iron shows up as orange or rust staining, a metallic taste or smell, and lightened hair turning orange rather than yellow. A KDF shower filter reduces some dissolved iron at that fixture. A meaningful iron load needs whole-house treatment upstream — the shower is the wrong place to fight it.

Three kinds of iron, and they behave differently

The distinction matters because it changes both what helps and how fast your cartridge dies. Ferric iron in particular will exhaust a sediment stage in weeks rather than months.

Why KDF helps and why it is not enough

KDF's redox chemistry acts on dissolved ferrous iron, converting it to an insoluble form retained in the cartridge. That is a genuine mechanism and it is why Culligan aims its inline ISH-100 at exactly this market — sulfur odor, chlorine and scale, using KDF media that it also notes inhibits bacterial growth.

But a shower filter holds a few ounces of media and sees every gallon that goes through one fixture. A well carrying a serious iron load will exhaust that in a fraction of its rated life, and the first symptom is falling pressure rather than returning stains. You end up replacing cartridges frequently and expensively while the laundry, the toilet cistern and the kitchen sink stain exactly as before.

Iron and hair

This is the reason a lot of people arrive at this page. Iron deposits on the hair shaft and oxidizes, which turns lightened hair orange — and it is routinely misdiagnosed as chlorine brassiness. The tell is the color: chlorine oxidation gives yellow or straw tones, iron gives orange or rust, and copper gives green.

A shower filter helps only to the extent that it removes iron before the water reaches your hair, which on a heavily loaded well is not much. A chelating shampoo removes deposits that are already there, which is the more effective intervention for the symptom. The full color discussion.

What to do properly

  1. Test the well, and get iron reported as a number in mg/L along with manganese, pH and hardness. The EPA's private well guidance covers what else to test for.
  2. Match the treatment to the form and the load. Oxidizing filters, aeration systems and greensand units all exist and are specified from that test result.
  3. Fit the shower filter last, as a polishing step at the fixture, not as the primary treatment.
  4. If it is iron bacteria, none of the above applies until the well has been shocked and the cause addressed.

+ Does a shower filter remove iron?

Some dissolved ferrous iron, partially, at that fixture. It will not stop staining elsewhere in the house and it exhausts fast on a heavy load.

Usually iron. Chlorine brassiness is yellow or straw-colored; iron is orange or rust; copper is green.

+ Can a shower filter remove iron bacteria?

No. Iron bacteria need well shock treatment and ongoing management, and a filter simply gives the biofilm another place to live.

+ Why does my shower filter die so quickly?

A high iron or sediment load exhausts a cartridge far ahead of its rated life. That is the filter telling you the treatment belongs upstream.
